Cast a Shadow
02:46
|
|||
I wonder if it’s better to be ash than to be bone
I don’t want to see the ground
when they send me back home
Borne of the sky like a bird
meant to fly on the wind
You gotta know where you stand
when it comes to the end, my friend
It casts a shadow over me
Sometimes it gets so dark
It’s too dark to see
Everything is everything
We’re all electricity and meat
Energy to feed more need
For heat in the machine
Think of the tree that was
Felled by the hands of a man
Tossed to the fire when he’s
Taken all the cold that he can stand
Or the animal that’s hanging
In the window by the pound on the street
It was once a vessel but now
It’s on the level of your feed
You are nothing different just an animal
By any other name
Food for the ground or the water
Or the sky just the same

Playing Cards
03:02
|
|||
Playing cards and old cigars
Road maps tickets and mason jar
In the gutter now
Water rushes past with no regard
Like don’t care
That it’s come this far
From the reservoir
Street lamps paint
The city blue
Humming like crickets
Down the avenue
It’s ghostly still
A taxi cab goes screaming by
Wherever it’s going it’s
Getting there fast
Another mystery
When the night
Is still
Let it happen
What it will
Find a nice spot
Climb it up to the top
A place to watch the world
Rushing by
Boots all caked with mud and grime
One man’s trash is another man’s find
They were waiting here
Leaves all curl as the seasons turn
Chimney’s pump smoke
As the wood stoves burn
I’m close to home
Out of the dark steps a small black cat
I wonder how he can live like that
On the streets alone
Our shoes hit the pavement
And they fall in time
I look on my arm and I’m glad that she’s mine
She was put in my path

Time Will Track Us Down
02:56
|
|||
Good morning baby
We’ve slept the whole night through
It’s good to think
We’ll see a day anew
It’s good to know
I collided with you
You know it’s fine now
Let’s keep what we’ve found
Because time will one day track us down
And we’re just thieves
Stealing all our lives
Why shouldn’t we?
We believe that it’s our right
We like it here
But we know we cannot stay
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth
Let’s buy another round
Because time will one day track us down
Running running running all of our lives
Pushing that great weight from off of our minds
It’s nipping at our boot heels
Now you know how prey feels
Come on baby
Let’s find a place to hide
The world’s like water
And I’m just swimming through
I move so slow
Because my bones are old and used
I think of years that were battered and abused
Look at the signs now
Let’s spread our love around
because time will one day track us down

Worth a Salt
03:40
|
|||
The only thing that’s worth a salt
Is to be loved down to a fault
A lot of thing in the world may change
A lot of things may stay the same
But the only thing that’s worth a salt
Is to be loved down to a fault
Take the rings off of all of my fingers
Take the shirt from off of my back
For years all I could see
Was just what I did lack
Take the car from out of the driveway
Drive it off in to a lake
For years I was mistaken
Thought the car
A man did make
But the only thing that’s worth a salt
Is to be loved down to a fault
Take the pension and the promise
Take the framed and hung degree
Take the fancy education
You don’t learn what you need
Take the news from the tv screen
News from from far off place
I don’t care what it means
All I need is in front of me
A lot of things in the world may change
A lot of things will stay the same
But the only thing that’s worth a salt
Is to be loved down to a fault

What would you say
When you look back on today
25 years from now?
Would you say that you gave your best to each day?
The best that you knew how?
Or would you say that you lived
Your life full of waste
That you could have done more
With what you had
That if you’re not spending
Your time doing good
Then what you are doing
Is bad?
All the pieces have to fit
Holy Jesus is this it?
What would you say
When you look back on today
25 years from now?
Would you have some regrets
About the abuse that you did
To the thing that gets you around?
Or would you have no regrets
Because life is for living
And living is all about fun?
Would you think of those years
When you’re leaving too soon
And saying goodbye to loved ones?
What would you say
When you look back on today
25 years from now?
Whatever you say
Would it be with a smile
Or would it be with a furrowed brow?
I know that I don’t want
My life in the past
To be smeared by a shadow of doubt
The man that can go with peace to the grave
Surely knew what this life
Was about

Never the Right Time
05:03
|
|||
How would I be, 43
When they hand me the bad news?
The cancer is in you
And it’s not going away
It will be with you
For the rest of your days
And all of the plans
That you had you can
Forget about
Because there’s nothing
To do but just ride
This thing out
I had plans to travel one day
After my years of hard work
When my debts were all paid
I was going to see the things in person
That I’d only read about
And right now I can’t believe
That I ever cared about the money
Like if I built up
A big enough pile
I could lay back
And enjoy it
For a while
It was never the right time
The right time is never
When you don’t decide
Last night I prayed
For a miracle to happen
In the morning
Nothing had changed
The nights are the worst
I have the most time to sit and think
And I feel covered by death
Like a shadow that hangs
I think of the choices
That I made
And the ones that I didn’t make
The ones that were made for me
And how I handled them
I think of the kids that I had
And how I’ll never see them
Grow old
I think of the children that they’ll have
And how I’ll never know them
How I’ll leave them the money
That I never used
With a message that there’s nothing
In waiting for anything
Nothing in this world at all
