Troubling Times
02:30
|
|||
Like the long hard winter
that whips at our backs
rolling across the country and blowing through the cracks
we can get through the nights
if we think of the past
when we lived through some turmoil
but it always did pass
the sounds of the city are weighing on me
honking horns and shouting in the streets
there's nothing to see here
the police always say
but at the scene of the crime
you can't look away
and take heart
my only love
there's nothing to scare
that I can think of
cause nothing in this world
was meant to last
and these troubling times
will surely pass
there's an ocean of silence between us these days
what's left unsaid
rattles in my head
going to war is no easy task
going it alone is too much to ask
we didn't start this thing to lay down our arms
when the going gets tough
when we're flying toward harm
there's nothing to do but charge in the night
toward the coming of day
toward end of the fight

Foregone Conclusion
02:26
|
|||
You ask me for an answer
It’s something I can’t give
But if I were a gambling man
I’d say that I’ll soon be bereaved
And everybody wants to be something
They can’t ever be
Everybody wants to know something
They can’t ever feel
It’s a foregone conclusion
You’re gonna leave me in the fall
When the wicked winds grown strong
When the seasons change and the leaves turn
I’ll watch as all of our hopes and dreams burn
And I’ll turn heavy on the bottle
To ease my troubled mind
I won’t want to leave the house
I’ll see your face in crowds all the time
It’s a foregone conclusion
Our love will ebb like the high of a purchase
And we’ll go looking for some new heights
Anything for a brief respite
From the monotony of our lives
And we’ll buy things and watch things and try things
And we’ll lie awake in the dead of the night
Knowing we’re just as empty
As the great black ocean of sky
It’s a foregone conclusion

Pleasure teaches nothing
But the joy of pleasure
The only way we learn
Is through pain
What moulds us
Isn’t our joy
What moulds us
Is what maims
We were just children
Dependent on each other
With no one to depend
On us
Playing house with all of
Our trinkets and trifles and stuff
Close your eyes
And depend on trust
And the cold night air
Smelled of burning leaves
And we slept in the same bed
But had different dreams
In mine I paint a picture
With broad strokes of pain
Hers left her flush
What it was she would not say
Like and enemy that just won’t
Leave me be
Time stole another day
Away just like a thief
Another day
I didn’t make it through
Without thinking of us
Without thinking of you
And sometimes I think
It’s better just to die
And to go as a hero
In people’s minds
Instead of limping around
Like an injured fool
With the stink of defeat
Hanging off of you
And men dislike it
Without knowing why
But they think
Therefore the grace of god
Go I
And I’m not
Doing to well
I don’t feel better
At all

Run Away
02:02
|
|||
There's a long hard road my love
hell below and heaven above
and a devil in your ear
that is preying on your fears
can you hear it? Oh no
can you feel it? Oh no
you can't run away no more
in the morning night has fled
light is here darkness is dead
it brings with it changing wind
we can let healing begin

What I Had Going For Me
03:13
|
|||
A battered hand that hurts when it rains
Pictures on the wall reminders of irrelevant days
A nothing job that barely pays
The need to improve in countless ways
And it was all a sham
Nothing left to do
I’ve figured it out
And I know it’s true
What I had going for me was you
A dependence on drugs that nags every day
A terrible headache that won’t go away
A cadre of friends that don’t know me in any way
The castle I built was made out of clay
My tears on the table
A little pools on the wood
My thoughts are like knives
That just keep drawing blood

Nothing could be more foolish
Than to lose your sense of self
To tie up all of your happiness
In belief in someone else
Nothing could be more foolish
Than to open up your arms
Drop all of your defenses
And leave yourself disarmed
You made a bad decision
You let yourself go
Needling thoughts and ideas
Sleep won’t come
Feebly you will walk out of your cave
Shield your eyes

Turn Your Life Around
02:10
|
|||
I had a dream
About somewhere down the road
A winter’s night
A call on the telephone
A long lost friend
A voice on the other end
A shattered life
A man that’s on the mend
I will be there when you turn your life around
Been some years now
Since I washed my hands of you
I think of you often
There was nothing left to do
You can’t help someone
That doesn’t want your help
Pangs in my chest
Every regret heartfelt
Everybody’s gotta cry sometimes
Everybody’s gotta feel pain
Nobody’s free
From the worries of the world
But we all feel in our own way

Before I Die
03:12
|
|||
When the flashbacks come
And the time is right
For me to leave this life
I hope I see my times
Before I see the light
And I hope you’re the one
I see before I die
It will jump to the start
When I was a child
And the road before stretched
A thousand lives
I can’t understand this life
But I sure do try
And I hope you’re the one
I see before I die
You come in to this world alone
You leave it that way too
I don’t expect to be any different
It’s true
But I want to take comfort
From my mind’s eye
I hope you’re the one
I see before I die
And then I met you
And it was good
And everything was going
As it should
Then you were gone
Because all things pass
And nothing in this world
Was meant to last
I hope you’re the one
I see before I die
